Is this due to code requirements, or merely what the inspector would like to see?

we are going to just bandy out his 100amp for 150 amp.

... possible bandy to electric h2o heater tankless next year... (the chief reason for the upgrade to 150a)

I wouldn't fifty-fifty consider going to less than 200a. The labor is the same, the parts departure is aught, and the tankless is going to consume power in big chunks.

i looked at some models and they crave 2pole 50a.

And some require four 30a circuits.
